2012 ENCOUNTER

Proudly presented by Capoeira Filhos da Bahia

19TH INTERNATIONAL ENCOUNTER 2012

Melbourne, Australia

EASTER WEEKEND April 4-9

A tradition for Capoeira schools is the Annual Graduation Ceremony called the Batizado. The Batizado (Baptism) is where new students are initiated into the world of Capoeira by partaking in the ritual of playing a Capoeira game with a high cordel player or a Master. In this game, the advanced player eventually tricks the initiate by putting them on the ground, hence ‘Baptizes’ the new student. Often the new player is Baptized with a Capoeira nickname, known as a ‘Nome de Guerra’, and given a cordel, a coloured belt. After the new players have been initiated, through a ‘Troca de Cordel’ new coloured belts are distributed to the older students who have worked hard over the past years and have, as a result, attained a higher level.

The Batizado is an event where students from different Capoeira academies have the opportunity to play together in the Roda (Capoeira circle) and where the advanced players and visiting capoeiristas from around the world can demonstrate their talent and challenge one another. The Batizado is source of inspiration for the participating capoeiristas and those who come to watch.

It’s a chance for friends, families and the community to get a taste of the creative energy force that is CAPOEIRA!
